About Gerrit
I have been a full stack engineer for over 15 years. Before my software career, I was a high school teacher in The Netherlands where I taught History, Economics, and social sciences. I have a BA in History with a minor in Economics and Geography. I was a teacher for over 8 years where I taught students of MS and HS grades. I was also a mentor (class leader) for 5 years for HS groups. I stopped being a teacher when I moved to the United States in 2007, there I switched careers and became focused on a career in software development; first starting in web development, and later moving into full stack engineering. At my previous company, I was team lead, and manager of a team of 5 engineers. In the company, Workiva, where I work now, I am the Staff Software Engineer on a team of 15 as I was looking for a job that was more hands-on coding. My specialty in software engineering is in JavaScript and AI, especially React and NodeJS. I have worked intensively with Python, Java, MongoDB, DynamoDB, MySQL, and all web development like HTML5 and CSS3. I have experience with Vue and Angular as well. I have been a mentor at CareerFoundry for 3 years now where I mentor students one-on-one to achieve their full stack bootcamp that focuses on the MERN stack. I love to mentor students because I like to give back to people who like to change careers.
