About James
I'm have an MA in Philosophy, in which I specialised in the Philosophy of Language, Epistemology, Meta-Ethics and Wittgenstein.
Teaching philosophy and mathematics is my passion, and it just so happens to be my full-time job!
I have over 7 years of tutoring experience, in which I've taught in excess of 3,000 hours, to over 90 different students. I have extensive experience in teaching Philosophy at A-Level, and also at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Level.
Over my years of experience, teaching at all levels, I've truly managed to master a Socratic methodology that gets the best out of every student I teach. It makes the lessons far more engaging, and also crucially builds a very strong foundational understanding of the logic behind the theory.
What I Teach:
- A-Level Philosophy
- Undergraduate Philosophy (BA)
- Postgraduate Philosophy (MA)
I always have an updated Enhanced DBS certificate.

No two students are the same. Each individual has different goals, learning styles and responsibilities, and I believe lesson plans need to be informed by this. Hence, I teach in a Socratic manner, in which I engage a lot with the student, asking them questions to really help build strong foundational knowledge, while filling in any gaps in knowledge along the way.
The best way to learn though is through practice, and by being challenged, which is how most lessons will be structured. I want my students to be thinking for themselves, to become comfortable with dealing with tough questions now, thereby making their final exams seem so much easier.

Perfect! James is an exceptionally talented and brilliant tutor who is knowledgeable in virtually all areas of philosophy, especially metaethics, analytic philosophy, and the history of philosophy. After taking several regular sessions with him on Superprof on topics such as Wittgenstein and the philosophy of language, I can confidently recommend him to students of all ages, whether they want an introduction to philosophy, need help with coursework, have more advanced goals, or simply study philosophy as a hobby.
Although philosophy is undoubtedly a very difficult discipline, James has an incredible ability to transform abstract and complex ideas into digestible explanations by using relatable examples and engaging in immersive Socratic dialogue with his students. Rather than simply reading from materials, he actively asks questions and encourages discussion. Moreover, he makes what he teaches as accessible as possible by drawing live flowcharts and bullet points, for example, to highlight important ideas in addition to verbal explanations.
In addition, James is a very systematic tutor. No matter what your goal is, he provides clear guidance on what would be best to work on and organizes sessions according to a structured plan, so you always know what to expect and can progress in a consistent manner. For instance, he often assigns readings or other materials to review before each session and explains what will be discussed beforehand so you can come prepared.
Last but not least, James is very chill and easy to talk to as a person. Overall, I cannot recommend him enough for anyone interested in philosophy! I am sure he would also be a great math teacher given his exceptional ability to think logically, systematically, and rigorously.- Sehwan was highly engaging, and posited some excellent questions to me during our sessions.James's response :
A highly talented and impressive individual, the back-and-forth philosophical debates were very interesting and informative.

Wittgenstein Expert and Maths Whizz!
James was well-versed in Wittgenstein and the Philosophy of language and really helped me with my undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Mathematics.
His deep knowledge of A-Level Maths really helped me get to grips with my first year of undergrad, as much of the content overlaps.
As for Philosophy, you can tell he has an MA. He was excellent.
I could not recommend James more...
He taught my daughter GCSE Maths, and then also for A-Level! He was absolutely superb, and our Freya had such an excellent experience being taught by James.

James helped me with my Undergraduate Module on Wittgenstein, and I then worked with him again during my MA, where I studied the Philosophy of Language.
His perspective on Language Philosophy was fascinating; you can tell that he teaches a lot of Maths, as his approach is very logical.
Chill and cool guy, too.Couldn't recommend James more...
James tutored my daughter Harriet for over a year, and during that time, he took her from a Grade 5 in Maths to a Grade 8.
He not only got her a brilliant grade, but completely changed her perspective on Maths. She fell out of love with the subject in Year 9, but he re-lit a spark she once had for it.
She's now taking it for A-Level, which she NEVER would have done without James.
Top tutor!!!Top Maths Tutor.
Helped both of my sons get A*s in A-Level Maths, which is remarkable, considering that we initially just wanted to get them both Bs!
Fantastic tutor, I'm so glad we went for James. Highly responsive, engaging and brilliant at teaching.
My lads loved their sessions with James, whom they used to refer to as a 'Legend'.Patient, engaging and intelligent.
James tutored me in BOTH A-Level Maths and A-Level Philosophy. He was unbelievably knowledgeable in both and clearly loved teaching them.
He often showed the proof behind a concept, which really helped me to digest it further.

James helped me out with my module on Epistemology while I was in my first year at Oxford. Unbelievably knowledgeable and a great teacher.

Fantastic Tutor!
James has been teaching me A-Level Maths now for 10 months, and he has been brilliant every step of the way. His knowledge of the spec, and of how to teach complex concepts, is remarkable.
I would 100% recommend him to anyone!Fantastic Philosophy Tutor!
I was struggling to comprehend Wittgenstein and Language Philosophy during my undergraduate studies at Cambridge, so I looked online for professional help, and I found James!
Not only was he highly knowledgeable, but also very patient, and the lessons were so interesting.
He also helped me out with Symbolic and Formal Logic during our lessons together!
What's even better, was that I referred James to my little brother, Max, whom he then taught A-Level Maths, and helped get him an A :)
James was a great tutor. I would recommend him to anyone.
I had James tutor my son in both A-Level Maths and A-Level Philosophy, and I am so pleased that we picked him.
Initially, we picked James as he has an MA in Philosophy, in which he specialised in mathematical logic. His knowledge of both fields was remarkable, and my son Andrew found his lessons to be not only really helpful but also so interesting.
Really cooperative, left brilliant feedback, and got my Andrew two A*s in both subjects.
Couldn't have asked for more.
Thank you James.
I decided to go with James for A-Level Maths as he had over 2,500 hours of maths tutoring experience, and it REALLY showed.
He was impeccably knowledgeable, a brilliant teacher, and knew the Edexcel Maths spec back to front.
Really calming and patient guy too.
Easily the best tutoring experience I've ever had.Superb A-Level Maths Tutor.

Couldn't recommend him more!Unbelievably knowledgeable in Mathematics, you can really tell that James has 2,500 + hours of tutoring in the subject.
His knowledge of the question types, exam technique and papers is remarkable. He got BOTH my son Harry and daughter Jess Grade 8s in their GCSE Maths Exams.
A truly remarkable tutor.Highly professional, engaging and passionate.
Lucy loved her lessons with James! She was apprehensive at first, but she benefited so much from them.
He built her confidence every week, and she went from a Grade 5 to a Grade 7 in just 2 months :)Have known James for 5 years, I met him at Karate of all places, he taught me how to defend myself. When I was in Year 11 I was complaining to him at a session about GCSE History, and he offered to help me out for free. Over about 5 sessions, he completely revolutionised the way I tackled History and History papers, and I ended up with an A! He's engaging, kind, amusing and highly passionate about his subjects. I would 100% recommend him to anyone wishing to study History at GCSE or A-Level
