About Andrew
I have been involved in video production since 2005. I have directed 8 films that have had over 55 screenings at festivals and conferences around the world including the award-winning feature-length documentaries I’m with Phil and The Breaks: Centuries of Struggle which both aired on several public television stations around the country. I currently serve as an Associate Professor of Film & Media Arts at The University of Pikeville in eastern Kentucky where I have been the coordinator of the film program since the Fall of 2014.
I also run the UPIKE Film and Media Arts Festival (fmafest.org) which has been running for 7 years now. We oversee hundreds of film and screenplay submissions each year and choose the best works to showcase at our festival. I understand what film festival jurors are looking for and can help you improve your work and get into more festivals.
I hold an MFA in Drama (Concentration in Film & Video Production) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, an MBA from the University of Pikeville, an MA in Telecommunications from the University of Alabama, a BS in Communications from the University of North Alabama, and an AA from Northwest-Shoals Community College.
When I am not teaching or making films I am usually reading comics & nonfiction books, watching movies, TV, or sports, playing video games, exercising, traveling, going to my church, helping my wife Alli decorate her classroom, or taking care of our dog and cat.

My approach to teaching is traditionally very hands-on and focused on learning through experience. The students in my courses complete a large variety of projects. They turn their work in at various stages so I can give them feedback along the way as they further develop their work. I try to be very student-focused in my courses and offer assistance as much as possible.
