About Charlie

Hello!

I am an approachable, enthusiastic, and encouraging tutor committed to helping you achieve your short and long-term study goals! I completed a PhD in History Durham University in 2014, and I have been working as a lecturer and tutor at a range of British universities, form elite Russel Group to newer post-92 institutions. I have a wealth of teaching experience, from leading large undergraduate courses to teaching bespoke one-to-one study projects. In 2018, I completed a PG Certificate in Higher Education at the Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching which conferred Fellowship of Advance HE (formerly the UK Higher Education Academy) and in 2020 I gained advanced instruction in teaching and learning online, via the Durham University Centre for Academic Development. The outstanding quality of my teaching has been recognised in student and staff evaluations, and I have been nominated for awards in teaching excellence at the Universities of Durham and York.

I can teach a range of study skills, but what I like most is helping students to develop your abilities in essay-writing, analysis, and building your own opinions about complicated topics. I am a very approachable person, and I like to hear what you think!

My approach to teaching is inclusive and supportive, aiming to understand students’ own individual ambitions and then helping them to negotiate the barriers to their progression. I like to use a student's own strengths and interests as a foundation to tackle more difficult topics and refine their academic skills. I wnat to know what you like doing and what you think you are good at, before progressing to the things that you might feel you are struggling with. I will always consult with students to make sure that my lesson and study plans are helping to build up your knowledge and confidence step by step until the final exam.

Each lesson is unique, planned with the requirements of each individual student in mind. In the first session, I will discuss your goals as well as what you think are your key strengths and weaknesses to come up with a plan to work towards these goals. This will help to build up your knowledge of the subject matter and working on your exam and essay technique.

I like to start each lesson by outlining some key objectives for the session, followed by a short revision activity based on previous lessons or homework assignments. I always make sure to use a range of different activities and exercises in my lessons to make sure that students can approach their subject material from any angle. Depending on which subjects you choose, these activities might include mind map for a key topic, analysing a source or a text (depending on the subject we are studying) or an essay or exam question plan that you might write up for homework. I usually finish a lesson with a quick reflection on whether you feel you have achieved the key lesson objectives, whether there are any areas that you feel you may need to consolidate, and what you think you’d like to take further next time.

Please get in touch if you would like to chat about the kind of support you are after! I look forward to hearing from you and seeing how we could work together towards your goals.
