About Sean

I'm an 18-year-old GCSE English tutor based in East London. I achieved a Grade 9 in GCSE English Language and a Grade 8 in English Literature, and I currently study English Literature at A-level, so I understand both the content students are studying and the demands of the current GCSE exams.

I particularly enjoy helping students who know what they want to say but struggle to turn their ideas into high-mark answers. I break essay writing, analysis and exam questions into clear, repeatable steps rather than expecting students to simply memorise model paragraphs.

Students I have supported have gone on to achieve grades 7–9, including students who had previously been working around grades 3–4. I adapt the way I explain things to the individual student, whether they need help building confidence, developing more sophisticated analysis or pushing an already strong answer towards the top grades.

I'm currently applying to study Law at the University of Cambridge. My interest in Law has strengthened the same skills I teach in English: close reading, precise argument and explaining ideas clearly.

Most importantly, I want lessons to feel encouraging and enjoyable. GCSE English can become frustrating when a student repeatedly hears that they need to “analyse more” or “be more perceptive” without being shown how. My job is to make that process understandable.

I prepare lessons in advance, I'm flexible around school and other commitments, and I'm happy to keep parents updated on progress.

About the lesson

My lessons are built around a simple process: identify what's holding the student back, show them exactly how to improve it, practise it together, and then apply it independently to an exam-style question.

In the first lesson, we'll look at the student's exam board, target grade and recent English work. This lets me identify where marks are being lost: whether that's analysing quotations, structuring essays, developing interpretations, creative writing, timing or understanding what the question is actually asking.

From there, lessons are personalised rather than following the same programme for every student.

A typical lesson involves:

• breaking down one important skill into clear steps
• looking at a strong example and understanding why it earns marks
• completing an exam-style question together
• the student attempting the skill independently
• specific feedback on what would move the answer to the next grade

I don't want students to memorise dozens of paragraphs that might not fit the exam question. Instead, I teach them how to approach unfamiliar questions confidently and build strong answers themselves.

For AQA English Literature, I can teach Macbeth, An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, Power and Conflict poetry and unseen poetry. For English Language, I cover reading analysis, evaluation, comparison, creative writing, persuasive writing and exam technique across both papers.

As exams approach, we can shift towards timed questions, full papers and targeted revision based on the student's weakest areas.

I teach Years 9–11, as well as younger secondary students who want to strengthen their reading and writing before GCSE.

Lessons are relaxed and encouraging, but always focused on measurable progress. I want students to leave knowing not only that an answer could be improved, but exactly how to improve it next time.
