About Umar

I am a Master’s graduate with research expertise motivated to help students achieve their goals. My research interests are in visual perception, particularly aesthetic perception, and how this interacts with emotional response. In my current position as a Tutor at the Glasgow International College of the University of Glasgow, I teach students academic research and skills at foundation (pre-first year undergraduate level) and pre-master's level, as well as undergraduate and post-graduate level. I specialise in research psychology and have extensive experience teaching research through my current role as a Tutor and previous work as a Research Assistant. At Glasgow International College (GIC), my ability to provide detailed feedback to students in one-on-one meetings, as well as mark formative and summative assignments has broadened my ability to help students think creatively and critically about their work through constructive feedback and by providing recommendations. My goal is to use my scientific interdisciplinary research background and creativity to support individuals' motivation for education in an interdisciplinary setting and to coordinate tasks that will benefit students learning at university level. My Master's degree level training in psychological research afforded me with the opportunity to hone my research skills in qualitative and quantitative methods, accomplish my Master's degree thesis, and enhance my scientific writing skills. These elements have collectively and have undoubtedly benefited me at Glasgow International College (GIC) as a Tutor, which I will aim to implement these skills in all my tutoring sessions. I have gained the ability to integrate organisational and communication skills academically in my employment role providing an exemplary level of teaching. I plan to utilise the knowledge and experience I have gained and apply these to the learning outcome. I have a determination to continue helping people who struggle with learning in educational contexts, and I feel certain that as a Tutor it will provide a pathway for me to empower others through educating them in subjects I feel truly inspired by.

About the lesson

I teach using an active learning approach that is student-led. I want the lessons to be effective and to ensure that students' learning is consolidated. I have been teaching at Glasgow International College, University of Glasgow for a year and a half now, and I was a freelance tutor previously. I specialise in academic research in general and in psychology. I support university students with academic skills in English such as critical analysis, paraphrasing and summarising, referencing, sentence structure, grammar, and synthesising points. I also provide academic advice as a learning adviser where I support students on a one to one basis with academic research, essay and critical review writing, dissertation and thesis planning.
