About Conan

I am an experienced educator, examiner and Head of Faculty with responsibility for Business, Economics and Computing. I bring together classroom teaching, curriculum leadership and examining experience to give students a clear understanding not only of the subject content, but also of what examiners are looking for in high-quality responses. My teaching is highly structured, responsive and rooted in strong subject knowledge. I place particular emphasis on literacy, numeracy and precise use of subject-specific terminology because students need to communicate ideas accurately, apply formulae confidently and use technical language effectively if they are to access the higher levels of GCSE and A-level mark schemes. I explicitly teach key terminology, quantitative skills and analytical frameworks, then revisit them through retrieval practice, questioning and regular knowledge checks to ensure students can recall and apply their learning independently. My experience as an examiner strengthens the way I teach examination technique. I understand how marks are awarded, where students commonly lose marks and what distinguishes an average response from a top-level answer. I use this insight to help students interpret command words, structure extended responses, develop chains of reasoning and produce more precise analysis and evaluation. Assessment is central to my approach. I use both formative and summative assessment to identify misconceptions, diagnose gaps in knowledge and determine exactly what a student needs to do next. When reviewing written work, I provide clear and purposeful feedback that identifies what has been done well, where marks have been lost and how the response can be improved. Students are then expected to act on that feedback through corrections, redrafting and targeted improvement tasks so that feedback leads directly to better performance. As a Head of Faculty, I also have extensive experience analysing examination data, reviewing student performance, developing curriculum plans and adapting teaching strategies to improve outcomes. This allows me to make tuition highly targeted, whether a student needs to close knowledge gaps, strengthen mathematical application, improve written analysis and evaluation, develop examination technique or build confidence under timed conditions. Above all, I believe strong teaching begins with understanding the individual student. I work hard to build positive professional relationships and create a learning environment in which students feel confident asking questions, making mistakes and learning from them. I am persistent, encouraging and ambitious for every student I teach, and I particularly value the moment when a concept that once felt inaccessible finally becomes clear. My tuition therefore goes beyond simply working through content. Each lesson is designed to develop knowledge, confidence, independent thinking and examination performance, with teaching adapted to the student’s current level, target grade and individual needs. Whether a student is aiming to secure a pass, improve by several grades or compete for the very highest marks, my focus is always on purposeful teaching, measurable progress and helping them achieve their full academic potential.

Given the increasingly complex and evolving educational landscape, adaptability, flexibility and innovation are central to my approach to teaching. As an experienced Head of Faculty, examiner and teacher, I continually refine my practice to ensure that students receive teaching that is purposeful, engaging and closely aligned with the demands of their examinations. I hold a PGCE in Business Studies from UCL and have extensive experience teaching Business and Economics from GCSE through to A-level. My work as an examiner also gives me valuable insight into assessment objectives, command words, mark schemes and the characteristics of high-performing responses, which I incorporate directly into my tuition. My lessons typically last between 50 minutes and one hour and are carefully structured around each student’s current attainment, target grade and specific areas for development. I use assessment, retrieval practice, targeted questioning and exam-style application to identify gaps quickly and ensure that lesson time is focused on the areas most likely to improve performance. Alongside Business and Economics, I offer Mathematics tuition from KS2 through to A-level, as well as Biology, Chemistry and Physics from GCSE through to A-level. This allows me to support students across a broad range of academic stages while maintaining a strong focus on subject knowledge, exam technique and measurable progress. My approach to tuition is not simply about delivering content. It is about providing students with expert guidance, strong subject knowledge, effective examination technique and the confidence to become increasingly independent learners.
