About John
I am an Irish, QTS-qualified international-school teacher with a PGCE, a degree in Politics and Sociology, and over eight years of international-school teaching experience. I have worked with students across lower secondary and other school settings, including in a leadership role in Global Perspectives.
My teaching emphasises critical thinking, discussion, collaboration and considering different perspectives. I aim to create a positive, structured learning environment where students feel comfortable practising new skills and learning from mistakes.

Would you like your child to feel more confident communicating with others, expressing their opinions or working collaboratively?
I am an experienced, QTS-qualified international-school teacher with over eight years of teaching experience. Through my work with students in international-school settings, I have seen how important communication, cooperation, empathy and confidence are to both academic progress and everyday life.
My online lessons provide a supportive environment in which students can practise social and communication skills, reflect on different situations and develop strategies they can use in school and beyond.
Depending on the student's age, interests and goals, lessons can focus on:
Communication: Expressing ideas clearly, asking questions and explaining opinions.
Confidence: Becoming more comfortable contributing to discussions and speaking in front of others.
Active listening: Listening carefully, taking turns and responding thoughtfully.
Conversation skills: Starting and maintaining conversations, finding common interests and asking follow-up questions.
Teamwork and collaboration: Sharing responsibilities, cooperating with others and working towards common goals.
Empathy and perspective-taking: Understanding that people may have different feelings, experiences and viewpoints.
Respectful disagreement: Expressing a different opinion constructively and managing disagreements calmly.
Problem-solving: Thinking through everyday social situations and considering appropriate responses.
My teaching approach
I believe these skills develop through practice, reflection and encouragement. Lessons can include guided conversations, role-play, discussion activities, real-life scenarios and age-appropriate problem-solving exercises.
I adapt activities to the student's age, confidence and individual goals. The aim is not to change a student's personality or make them more extroverted, but to help them feel more comfortable, capable and confident in situations that matter to them.
Where appropriate, I can also help students reflect on situations they have found difficult and consider different ways of responding in the future.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
I had the pleasure of working alongside John McDonagh at The Dewey School in Hanoi, and I can recommend him without hesitation.
John is an outstanding teacher of History, Humanities and Global Perspectives. His subject knowledge is deep, but what sets him apart is his ability to make complex ideas clear and accessible. He has a gift for turning challenging content into lessons that are engaging and memorable, and his students consistently came away with a genuine understanding of the material rather than just a set of facts.
He places real emphasis on developing students’ academic skills. John helps students think critically, conduct meaningful research, analyse sources carefully and communicate their ideas clearly in writing. Just as importantly, he builds their confidence, guiding them to become more independent learners who are able to take ownership of their own progress.
John is also a thoroughly reliable and committed professional. He cares deeply about every student’s progress, follows through on his responsibilities, and contributes generously to the wider life of the school beyond his own classroom. He is the kind of colleague who makes a team stronger.
Any school would be fortunate to have John on its staff, and I recommend him highly.View more recommendations
