About Julia

I grew up in California but have lived extensively abroad in both Europe and Asia. I have a deep love for East Asia and completed my PhD with a focus on Japan. If you’ve ever wanted to travel to Japan, I’d love to talk with you about it! Travel is one of my passions, but I also enjoy reading about different parts of the world and learning about their cultures and histories.

In addition to academic work, I’ve always loved reading fiction and doing my own creative writing. I write poetry and short stories, and in recent years I’ve become especially interested in writing longer essays—and even working on a book! There’s something special about writing something meaningful and feeling proud enough to share it with others. Have you ever written something like that? It’s a wonderful feeling, and I’d love to help you get there, too!

About the lesson

Hi! Nice to meet you! I’ve taught at a range of schools and truly love working with students. I believe there’s no such thing as a “stupid” question, and I’m always happy to take as much time as needed to work through a problem together. I genuinely enjoy the process of both learning and teaching, and I’m committed to helping you succeed academically while also growing in a thoughtful and positive way through our work together.

I’m here to support you with anything you might need in the humanities. My areas of specialization include religious studies, history, art history, and—especially—writing. I’ve spent countless hours working with university students on how to craft and organize compelling essays, talk through their ideas, and become more confident, effective writers. I truly love the art of writing and would be excited to share that passion with you. Writing is a skill that goes far beyond the classroom—it will serve you well in whatever path you pursue.

I also have extensive experience working with international students, especially from Europe and Asia, and I strive to be sensitive to the particular challenges and strengths they bring to the learning process. In addition, I have worked closely with students with ADHD and other learning differences, and I’m committed to creating a supportive and flexible learning environment tailored to your individual needs.
