About Kai

Hi, I'm Kai. I'm a second-year PPE student at SOAS, University of London, with a special focus on African and East Asian philosophy and political economy, though I have a strong background in the traditional Western syllabus too. I tutor GCSE and A-Level students in Philosophy, Politics, Religious Studies, Economics and Drama, both online and in-person in Exeter. My goal as a tutor is to make these complex subjects feel less daunting to students studying them for the first time, while bringing a sense of excitement and curiosity into their learning.

As president of my uni's philosophy society, my passion has been showing how these topics aren't just confined to the classroom but affect our day-to-day lives. I want to bring that same approach to my tutoring, helping you see why these subjects are important in our ever-changing world and to think critically about the world around you.

I'm particularly interested in study techniques. As a neurodivergent student, I've developed effective ways to study and revise, which helped me achieve A*/A grades across my four A-Levels. I can help create tailored learning strategies that work for your brain, not against it. I use tools such as Anki, Notion, and Obsidian, and can give practical advice on note-taking and revision.

Outside of uni, I play jazz guitar and do photography.

If you need help with a specific subject or want to improve how you study, send me a message. We can discuss what you're looking for and see if it's a good fit.

My tutoring style is a combination of structured learning with flexible, student centred approaches that help to maximise engagement. Every session starts with a brief check-in and review of the previous session to help build continuity, before setting clear goals for the session together. I like to begin with a real world question that relates to the content we'll be reviewing, helping students to think creatively and see connections beyond the classroom. I then explain and break down key concepts, as well as working through problems with the student, before letting them practice independently.

Sessions are highly interactive: I am a firm believer in the fact that varied forms of learning mean better retention. Expect informal discussions, games, critical thinking exercises and puzzles to help the subjects come alive. If students feel that they would benefit from the use of revision or note-taking software, we can have specific sessions where I will introduce tools such as Anki for spaced repetition, Notion for organisation, and effective note-taking methods tailored to the student's brain.

Progress is measured through regular assessments as well as practice questions that will be set at the end of each session. I track in detail what we've covered and any areas needing reinforcement or extra focus. My goal is creating a supportive environment where the student feels comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing independent critical thinking skills.
