Find a Psychology Tutor in Burwood East

Learning falls into four broad categories in psychology: conditioning (classical and operant), observation, and insight.

• Classical conditioning links a neutral stimulus to an automatic response. Pavlov demonstrated this when dogs salivated simply hearing a tone.
• Operant conditioning relies on reinforcement and punishment to guide choices. Praising effort makes students more likely to try again.
• Observational learning occurs by modelling someone else's actions. Children pick up habits by watching parents or peers.
• Insight learning describes grasping a concept without trial and error. This explains breakthroughs that seem to arrive out of nowhere.

Knowing these categories lets you study smarter and retain more.

The discipline is built around describing, explaining, predicting, and influencing human behaviour.

• Describe — Researchers observe and document behaviour without interpretation.
• Explain — Theories are built to account for observed phenomena.
• Predict — Prediction allows early intervention before problems escalate.
• Control — Therapies and interventions stem from this goal.
