About JOËL
I have taught English and French for thirty years at universities in Quebec Province and Mexico. I hold a B.A., an M.A. and a Ph.D. in linguistics from Canadian universities. I have been teaching university classes on line since 2017, and have tutored on line extensively. I am most frequently asked for help correcting and re-writing texts by natives speakers of French, Spanish, Hindi and Persian.

Whatever the student's level, I proceed from 'the known' to 'the unknown'. (This is akin to what Stephen Krashen calls '+1'.) I find out what the student already knows, and choose with her (generic feminine) some realistic goals.
I start with goals within the limits of her ability to 'assimilate' (Jean Piaget's term), in other words, I seek to expand categories that the student already knows (e.g., by teaching more vocabulary of a certain type, refining the student's use and understanding of certain conjugations and helping her to improve accent and intonation cues that she already produces or at least understands).
After a few lessons, it may become feasible to revise and extend the original goals beyond what the student can simply 'assimilate', and require that she 'accommodate' (Piaget's term for creating new categories of knowledge when those previously established in the learner's mind can neither hold nor handle completely novel language material).
Over a number of lessons and after successive waves of 'assimilation' and 'accommodation', the student approaches native-like skill levels. This is implemented through the systematic use of pictures and clips which serve as the bases for the following carefully ordered tasks:
a) description
(=identify and distinguish Figure and Ground)
b) explanation
(= identify Action patterns (cf., L.eonard Talmy), cause-and-effect relationships, resulting states)
c) evaluation / supposition / prediction and more
My approach to any level of ESL teaching with any specific focus will be as outlined here.
The method and principles are well-grounded in theory and highly specific in concrete application, producing rapid and measurable results in students of varying degrees of maturity and commitment.
