About Christina

My name is Ms. Chrissy. I have been a tutor/teacher for 11 years of my own 2 children. I also have been a tutor/teacher for other children for the past 8 years. I have 3 cats, 1 dog, and lots of ducks at my house. I love teaching children from all around the country and also the world! I chose to be a tutor because I have a true passion for teaching. I have been married to a wonderful man for 14 years and we get along great. I love to tailor my sessions to my students and their needs rather than trying to fit them into a "box". I love to draw, write, paint, and do anything creative in my 'free time'. I also love coming up with ways to help my students learn better and want to come to my tutoring sessions.

About the lesson

I have a passion for seeing young minds grow and experience that "ah-ha, I get it now" moment; you know, that moment where things just seem to click into place for them and they start gaining mastery of a skill or subject from that point forward. My area of expertise is breaking down subjects into their critical skill sets and knowledges and creating highly structured, individualized lessons for the learner that guide them to at first proficiency and then self-sufficiency in learning of the subject.

In order to guide the children that I teach to this moment, I break down the subjects into the core skills and knowledges that are necessary to achieve competence and then excellence in the subject. The key to the success that I have had in teaching is building skills/concepts within the learner's mind in a very specific order.

Teaching to me is like building a house. First you must assess what skills the student has in the subject and their relative strengths. The assessment stage is like surveying the land. The second stage is focusing on the fundamental skills and knowledges for the subject and ensuring the learner is first proficient and then excellent in these skills. The fundamental stage is like making a strong foundation for the house. The third stage is focusing on the skills and knowledges that can only be mastered once the fundamental skills and knowledges are in place and ensuring they are at the desired proficiency level. This is the stage that is like putting up the walls, roof, and any finishing touches to the house. When these steps are achieved, the learner has that "ah-ha" moment, where they reach that level of understanding and they can learn on their own in that subject going forward and achieve mastery.
