Mathematics and logic must be based on sound understanding of the methodology. I do not give anyone formulas to memorize, but rather show them how the creators of those formulas have gained their understanding. Every process has a logical structure that unfolds in steps and if all those steps are clear even the most complex and initially confusing concepts can be easily recreated and thus never forgotten.
