About Lillian
I am a piano tutor with 6 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance alongside a diploma in music psychology from a short professional course. I have taught over 230 students and I believe my background in music psychology — which covers how people learn, remember, and perform music — gives me an analytical advantage in diagnosing student difficulties that experience alone would not provide. I specialise in the romantic and late romantic repertoire as a performer but teach across all periods with equal facility. I have a particular interest in helping students manage performance anxiety and have developed a small workshop programme on the topic that I run for local music students annually. I perform in a piano duo with a colleague and maintain an active recital schedule in both solo and chamber settings.

My piano teaching follows a historically contextualised approach where understanding the era, style, and purpose of each piece of music is treated as inseparable from learning to play it. When a student begins a Bach invention we spend time understanding counterpoint and what Bach was actually doing structurally — this makes memorisation easier, interpretation more informed, and performance more convincing. My technical approach is rooted in the Russian piano school tradition, which I encountered through my own teacher, emphasising weight transfer, arm involvement, and wrist flexibility as the basis of a technique that is both powerful and sustainable. I work extensively on sight-reading in every lesson because it is the skill most students most want and most teachers most neglect — I have a systematic progression of exercises that builds reading ability measurably over time. Students working on contemporary styles receive the same historical contextualisation — understanding what makes a specific pop voicing or jazz chord characteristic of its era and genre makes learning it faster and playing it more convincingly. I address performance anxiety directly as a teachable skill, using breathing techniques, mental rehearsal, and graduated performance exposure as part of standard lesson preparation for any student who is going to play for an audience. My approach to pedalling is explicit and detailed where many teachers leave it to intuition — students leave my studio knowing exactly why, when, and how much pedal each style of music requires. Exercises are drawn from Hanon, Czerny, and Cortot but are always contextualised within the repertoire being studied so they feel purposeful. I give parents of younger students specific guidance on how to support home practice without creating conflict. Every student in my studio knows what their current goals are and has agreed to them.
