- Practice a variety of skills in 90 minutes of class with a clear logic

I lived in the USA for over half my life before moving to Europe, so I grew up immersed in the English language and speaking it with my friends and family. I have always been fascinated by languages and loved learning new words and phrases to take my writing to the next level.

What a difficult question! Although I'm not very political, I would say that one of the people who exemplifies what the US has to offer would be Barack Obama. He rose from being a community organizer to the first African American president of the US, embodying hope, unity, and forward-thinking optimism. He was and is a symbol of what people sometimes see as "The American Dream" and progressivism in the US.

In American culture, we are generally open to making small talk with strangers and sharing personal details that many cultures would only share between acquaintances or even friends. You may have a chat with the cashier at the supermarket about what you plan to make with the leeks you're buying or tell the person next to you on a flight about the family you're going to visit on the other side of the country. After these personal exchanges, it's not expected that you'll carry on the relationship and become friends - it's just seen as being friendly. Not good or bad, just different! It's a contrast to the difference in relationships denoted by "tu" and "vous" in French.

Nowadays, we can use ChatGPT to translate or write, or watch Netflix with subtitles in our language, but it's just different to be able to watch your favorite TV show in VO (original version) and write an email yourself without relying on DeepL. English is still the lingua franca of 1.5 billion people all over the world, and being able to speak it opens doors professionally, culturally, and personally. Being a competent and confident English speaker also allows you to connect on a deeper level with others who don't share your native language - and don't we all want that?

While English isn't a grammar-intensive language, what it lacks in grammar it makes up for in vocabulary. Phrasal verbs, six ways of saying the same thing depending on whether you're being formal, literary, informal, or using slang…The key to mastering English is through input and being aware. Consuming a variety of media at your level (podcasts, articles, songs, TV shows, books…the list goes on) will expose you to a vast array of language - then it's up to you to organize it in your mind (and probably on paper) and start using it. Above all, what will enable you to reach a high level of English (or any language) is finding your own personal "why" and developing a love for the language.

When I say I've always loved language, it goes back to the beginning. When I was little, I used to give my brother and sister fake "tests" which I then graded and gave back to them. In high school, there was a time where I started a "word of the day" with my friends: I would look for a word in the dictionary that seemed a bit different or fun, and we'd try to use it as much as possible during the school day. And finally, my family still comes to me when they have grammar questions and sends me mistakes that they find on signs and the like. I've built up quite a reputation, I guess!

Before I moved to Europe, I'd mostly traveled around the US, to neighboring countries, and to a few islands. After I started speaking Spanish in my teens, I went to Mexico and realized I really wanted to continue strengthening my command of Spanish. That's one of the reasons why I moved to Spain, sight unseen, in my late 20s, and I have never looked back! I've since been to many countries around Europe, and one of my favorite things about living here is the rich diversity you can find after a relatively short train ride. A few hours later, you can be in a different country, speaking a different language, immersed in a different culture. It's a privilege many don't have!

The relationship I have with many students, while professional, is also like a friendship. The longest-standing students have been with me for over 5 years, and throughout that time, I've been with them through moves to different cities and countries, job changes, marriages, and births. However, despite this close relationship, we never lose sight of the goal at hand and are able to make consistent progress by continually re-evaluating our objectives. Even those who are with me for a shorter time get to know me and are able to reach a level of comfort and confidence that sets the stage for productive language learning. While they may like some classes more or less, they always recognize the utility of what we are learning - and we always manage to have a laugh or two!
