As a tutor, my approach is to offer warmth, positivity, and patience - I find that a relationship which feels reciprocal and compassionate is more effective than one which feels hierarchical and distant. I encourage regular exam practice from an early stage so that my student has an awareness of what past papers will look like. I set clear, achievable objectives, and I encourage young people to think about their strengths and areas for improvement, so that they become better learners across the board. I love teaching and always bring a positive energy to the room.
My work as a playwright (under the name Emma Hemingford) gives me a delight in crafting language, and allows me to offer constructive advice and guidance to young people interested in a writing career themselves.

Over my years of working as a private tutor, I've achieved outstanding results with all my students; helping them to gain top grades, enter the schools of their choice, and make lasting academic or personal progress. Furthermore, I pride myself on sharing my passion for English with everyone I work with, which encourages my students to become independent learners with curiosity and drive of their own.
Areas of expertise include teaching English at KS1 level, 11+, GCSE, and A Level; teaching creative writing; providing personal statement assistance; mentoring students through personal and academic difficulties; teaching other Humanities subjects such as Drama; and preparing students for Oxbridge Entrance. I have worked with students at all levels of academic ability; with SEN students; international students; and I have taken sole responsibility for the curriculum of young people who are being home-schooled; always with excellent results. I have curated and delivered intensive 11+ preparation courses, and from 2017 – present, a prestigious tutoring agency has employed me to write the model answers for the 11+ papers they offer to their students as revision material. I’ve also helped several students win scholarships, e.g. the John Colet St Pauls Academic Scholarship.
I also teach creative writing in an extra-curricular capacity to young people from the ages of eight to eighteen. This involves anything from writing sonnets to entering play-writing competitions to composing short stories. As well as my playwriting and acting work, I am a Project Leader on the Reach Out Programme, which delivers after-school workshops to pupils with low attainment from disadvantaged schools.
