I feel that a tutor's most important job is to help convince the student that they are a capable and worthwhile person. The discouragement that can follow perceived failures in classes is often more damaging to a person's education than the failure itself. Of course, I also go to great lengths to ensure my own thorough understanding of the subject, and that is obviously quite important as well.
