About Charlotte
I am a doctoral researcher in philosophy at the University of Birmingham, where my PhD is fully funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC); one of the most competitive research awards in the UK. My academic background spans the full breadth of the discipline: I hold an MA with Distinction in Philosophy of Biological and Cognitive Sciences from the University of Bristol, and a First Class BA (Hons) in Philosophy with Sociology from the University of Birmingham.
Alongside my research, I have taught and lectured at undergraduate level in philosophy, covering areas from epistemology and formal logic to philosophy of medicine and the history of Western thought. This experience means I understand not just the subject matter in depth, but how students at different levels encounter and struggle with it, and how to help them through.
I am patient, thorough, and genuinely passionate about philosophy as a discipline. I believe that good philosophical thinking is a skill that can be learnt, and that the best thinking happens when students are encouraged to develop their own authorial voice, challenge received ideas, and engage critically with the material rather than simply absorbing it. My tutorials are open, intellectually curious spaces where all views are welcome, provided they are explored with care and respect for others.
I am committed to punctuality, clear communication, and making every session count. I am happy to discuss your goals in a free introductory conversation before we begin, so that lessons are focused, purposeful, and genuinely useful from the start.

I offer one-to-one philosophy tutorials tailored entirely to the needs of the individual student: whether you are preparing for an A-level or IB exam, working through a challenging undergraduate module, developing a postgraduate dissertation, or simply exploring philosophical ideas as an adult learner.
My sessions are rooted in the Socratic method: rather than lecturing, I guide students through careful questioning, close reading of primary texts, and structured argument-building. The goal is not just to help you understand the material, but to develop the kind of independent, rigorous thinking that philosophy rewards, and that transfers across academic disciplines and everyday life.
I draw on formal training and university-level teaching experience across the full range of core philosophical areas, including epistemology, formal logic, philosophy of science, philosophy of medicine and psychiatry, metaphysics, feminist philosophy, aesthetics, and the history of Western philosophy. I also support students with sociology and research methods, including training in NVivo, SPSS, and Stata.
Typical sessions run 60 to 90 minutes, though this is flexible depending on your workload and goals. I am equally comfortable working through a specific essay question, building foundational understanding from scratch, or providing detailed written feedback on your work between sessions.
I hold an AHRC-funded PhD candidacy at the University of Birmingham, an MA with Distinction in Philosophy of Biological and Cognitive Sciences from the University of Bristol, and a First Class BA (Hons) in Philosophy with Sociology. Lessons are available online across the UK and in person in Birmingham.
Review

Perfect! I had a really positive experience working with Charlotte. I initially booked a session to discuss possible approaches to an epistemology essay, and the meeting was incredibly helpful. She was flexible with scheduling and very clear from the beginning about expectations and how the sessions would work.
What I appreciated most was that the session genuinely felt collaborative. Rather than pushing a particular interpretation or “correct” answer, she helped me explore different argumentative directions and weigh up the strengths and weaknesses of each approach for myself. That made the process feel intellectually engaging rather than prescriptive, and by the end of the session I felt confident and prepared to write my essay plan independently.
She then provided detailed written feedback on the plan within a very quick timeframe, and the level of depth and care went far beyond the kind of feedback I usually receive through university support. The comments were thoughtful, constructive, and extremely useful for developing the structure and argument further.
I plan to continue having regular lessons with her to support future assignments, particularly because the written feedback is so thorough and genuinely goes above and beyond.See more reviews

I am in my late forties and came to Charlotte with no formal philosophy background whatsoever, just a long-standing curiosity about consciousness and the mind that I had never had the chance to explore properly. I was a little nervous that I would be out of my depth, but Charlotte immediately put me at ease. She curated a reading list that suited exactly where I was starting from, and each session felt like a genuine conversation between two people who found the questions fascinating rather than a lecture I was being talked at. She is warm, funny, endlessly patient, and clearly loves what she does. Six months in I am reading Dennett and actually enjoying it. If you are an adult learner wondering whether philosophy tutorials are for you, they are, and Charlotte is exactly the right person to take you there.
I came to Charlotte at a fairly desperate point in my Masters dissertation. I had a topic I cared about but could not get my argument to hold together, and my supervisor's feedback was that my theoretical framework needed substantial work. Charlotte read my drafts carefully between sessions and came prepared with genuinely incisive questions that helped me see exactly where my reasoning was weak. She never imposed her own views, but she challenged mine rigorously and that pressure was exactly what I needed. What I valued most was that she treated me as an intellectual equal while still being clearly the more experienced thinker in the room. My dissertation was resubmitted and passed with no corrections. I would not hesitate to recommend her to any postgraduate student feeling stuck.
I started working with Charlotte about 4 months before my A-level exams, mainly because I was finding the ethics and epistemology units really hard to write about clearly. She has this wonderful ability to make even the most abstract ideas feel grounded and relevant. She would relate Kantian ethics back to real situations until it genuinely made sense, rather than just feeling like something to memorise. She also helped me enormously with essay structure and developing my own argument rather than just summarising philosophers. My teacher had always said my essays read as too descriptive, and Charlotte fixed that within a few sessions. I got an A in my philosophy paper and I am certain I would not have without her.
I found Charlotte through Superprof after falling badly behind in my first-year logic module and genuinely not knowing where to start. From our very first session it was clear she was different to most teachers. She never made me feel stupid for not understanding. Instead she broke every problem down patiently until it clicked, and then pushed me just a little further than I thought I could go. What I appreciate most is that she never just gives you the answer. She walks you through the reasoning until you find it yourself, which means it actually sticks. By the time my exam came around I was the one explaining truth tables to my flatmates. I went from predicted to fail to passing comfortably. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

I offer two levels of written feedback alongside live teaching sessions:
• Brief feedback: focused comments on overall structure, argument, and clarity. •
Detailed feedback: more in-depth analytical and conceptual commentary throughout, including argument development, use of literature, structure, and critical engagement.
The amount of preparation time required depends on the type of work (for example, whether it is an essay plan or a full draft), as well as its length and complexity. I am always happy to discuss this beforehand so expectations and costs are clear for both sides. Reduced rates may be available for first sessions.
