About Margot

I am graduating with an honors Neuroscience BS from USC, and will begin my Masters in Biomedical Engineering at the same institution. I received As in pre-med courses including organic chemistry, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and neurobiology, as well as electives including physics for engineers (mechanics, and electricity and magnetism); calculus I, II, and III; and probability theory. I enjoy deconstructing difficult problems into simpler components, and have used my learning strategies to excel in difficult classes, earning me a GPA of 3.97 (all As and A-). I received a 1520 on the SAT, a 520 on the MCAT, and am a National Merit Scholar. The majority of my experience includes tutoring college-level organic chemistry. As head Learning Assistant for the top organic chemistry class at USC, I manage a team of 15 tutors, instructing them on the content and how to effectively help students in class. I assist the professor during office hours, consult on exams, and have helped dozens of clients improve their grades. I have also taught calculus, pre-calculus, physics, and biology to high school and college students. My experience extends to children aged 3+. I volunteer at an afterschool tutoring program where I assist a wide range of ages in everything from reading to arithmetic, and aim to make learning fun and engaging.

About the lesson

Having been a tutor in some of the most notoriously challenging subjects in college for five years, I discovered that everyone learns differently. Teaching is a form of learning itself; learning how to reconstruct complex concepts into familiar, digestible content that is accessible for everyone. I prioritize teaching my students not just the content, but also strategies for studying, learning, and test-taking. When I take on a new student, I request that they send me the material they use in their classes; all teachers teach a little differently so it’s important to tailor my assistance to their particular class. I also ask that they come with content questions or practice problems prepared so they can get as much out of our sessions as possible. I prioritize fundamental understanding of concepts over rote memorization to reduce the amount of tedium and increase the utility and persistence of that knowledge throughout their studies.
