About Giovanni

Hi my name is Giovanni Velez and I'm offering private drum lessons for all ages and levels. I am a qualified and professional teacher with over 16 years of experience in studying and playing drums including a Bachelor of Music from BIMM London (First Class Honours Degree) and a Master in Music Performance from UWL. Over the past 15 years, I have participated in studio and live recordings, pedagogy lessons, live performances, showcases, master classes, and festivals and have gained valuable work experience to share my knowledge with students of any level. My studio is based in Acton Town (W3 8DJ), but I am happy to travel and teach you in the comfort of your place if you can cover travel expenses. The first induction lesson is completely FREE. I charge 25 pounds for 1 hour or 45 pounds for 2 hours. I also offer some discounts for block lessons. A FREE pair of sticks: Vic Firth Nova 5A (LAST 5 PAIRS AVAILABLE!) will be included with your first lesson. Get in touch for more information or any questions.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I was 11 years old at school, in one of those music classes where half the class is bored and the other half is pretending not to be. Something just clicked. I remember thinking, “Wait… this is actually fun.” While other kids moved on to football or video games, I stayed stuck on that feeling. From that point on, music became the thing I kept coming back to, even when I tried to ignore it.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Definitely. Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Foo Fighters. I’ve listened to them so much that they probably owe me money. Somehow they never get old. Different moods, different phases of life, same bands. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

The hardest course I could give is teaching someone how to stop overthinking and actually feel what they’re playing. Technique is important, sure, but learning when not to play, when to breathe, when to let the music do the talking… that’s the tricky part. It’s frustrating, eye opening, and usually comes with a few “ohhh, now I get it” moments.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Any instrument once you go past the basics. But I’d say the voice, because you can’t separate it from yourself. If you’re tired, stressed, or nervous, it shows immediately. There’s no hiding behind strings or keys. It’s brutally honest.
  • What are your keys to success?

Showing up, even on days you don’t feel inspired. Being curious. And not taking yourself too seriously. Progress happens when you’re consistent, not when you’re perfect.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Dave Grohl, because he seems like the kind of guy who’d end the night playing air drums on the table.

Thom Yorke, because I’d love to hear him talk without a microphone or a big stage.

John Frusciante, because I feel like one random conversation with him would change how you think about music forever.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I once completely messed up a performance after practicing like crazy for weeks. I was convinced I’d ruined everything. My teacher just laughed and said, “Good. That’s how you learn.” Annoying at the time, very true in hindsight.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I adapt to the student, not the other way around. I explain things in simple terms, I’m patient, and I don’t forget that music should stay enjoyable. Also, I’m very good at finding weird but effective ways to explain things, which students seem to remember surprisingly well.
