I am a playwright, screenwriter, nonfiction and fiction writer and director. I have taught at the college level, high school, as well as adult learners, elementary and middle school students. I approach my classes by first establishing a baseline- where are my students now? What has been their experience with learning and what are their barriers to success? Since I teach writing and reading, I discover my students' interests and try and guide them toward competency by creating a curriculum about what they are already passionate about and then create connections between those interests and broader fields.
I take my students seriously and I insist that they take themselves seriously. I begin by explaining that we are all committed to excellence and I will guide and support them toward that goal. At the same time, I believe that they are not competing with each other or even themselves, but building upon what they already know. Beginning with their knowledge, we are already successful. The next steps are carefully structured so that success is the one and only way forward.
I taught screenwriting in a college for 10 years. Before that, I taught theatre, acting and playwriting in a high school for two years and 10 years before that I worked as an artist-in-residence at many middle and high schools.
I have also tutored children who were having trouble reading and I can say with 100 percent confidence that I can help any child read fluently.
I have also mentored men and women who wanted to pursue higher education and many of them now have advanced degrees in the fields of their choice.
I am always willing to talk about my rates with a family or student.
