About Emma
I am a scholar with extensive experience supporting students in writing, public speaking, and argument development. I hold both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Communication Studies, and I have worked with students across a wide range of academic levels, from introductory college courses to advanced speech and debate. I am a published writer in the field of pedagogy (teaching methods) and am professionally active in the field through writing and research. My background includes tutoring and coaching students in persuasive writing, speech organization, delivery, and critical analysis.
As a tutor, I approach my work with professionalism, care, and respect for each student’s goals. I prepare for sessions, communicate clearly, and focus on helping students understand not only what to improve, but how and why. Whether we are working on an essay, a speech outline, or delivery techniques, my goal is to help students leave sessions with greater confidence in their ideas and clearer strategies for moving forward.
I strive to create a supportive and focused tutoring environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, thinking out loud, and revising their work. I take student learning seriously and treat tutoring as a collaborative process grounded in clarity, accountability, and growth. I look forward to working with you and supporting your development as a writer and speaker.

My approach as a tutor is grounded in the understanding that learning happens through dialogue, practice, and reflection, rather than through one-directional explanation. I see tutoring as a collaborative process in which students arrive with existing knowledge, questions, and strategies, and my role is to help them clarify, extend, and apply that knowledge in ways that make sense within their specific academic context. Rather than re-teaching content in isolation, I focus on how students are interpreting assignments, organizing ideas, and making communicative choices, and I work alongside them to refine those processes.
In practice, my tutoring method emphasizes active engagement with material. I ask students to talk through their thinking, explain what they are trying to accomplish, and identify where they feel uncertain or stuck. From there, we work directly with course materials, drafts, outlines, or speech plans. I model strategies such as breaking complex tasks into manageable steps, identifying audience and purpose, and making connections between concepts and examples. When appropriate, I demonstrate techniques such as argument structure, organization, or delivery, then invite students to practice and reflect on what worked and what still feels challenging. I prioritize asking questions that prompt students to articulate their reasoning rather than providing answers for them, which supports both confidence and transfer of skills beyond the tutoring session.
A typical tutoring session begins with a brief check-in about the student’s goals for the session and the requirements of the assignment or course. We then review relevant materials together, such as an assignment prompt, rubric, draft, or speech outline. Much of the session involves guided practice, which might include revising a section of an argument, rehearsing part of a speech, or reorganizing ideas to improve clarity and flow. I close sessions by asking students to reflect on what they found useful and to identify next steps they can take independently. This structure helps students leave with a clearer sense of direction and strategies they can apply on their own.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my emphasis on shared problem-solving and my ability to work across different forms of communication. My background in Communication Studies and speech and debate allows me to support students with written arguments, oral presentations, and critical analysis.
