About Therese
Teaching saxophone is a privilege and a responsibility that I approach with a focus on nurturing both technical skill and artistic individuality. I believe every student has a unique sound and story to tell through their instrument, and my role is to guide them in discovering and refining that voice. Foundational skills like posture, breath support, embouchure control, finger agility, articulation, and rhythmic precision are the cornerstones of my lessons, giving students the tools they need to produce a clear, consistent, and beautiful tone. I emphasize intonation and dynamics as essential for expressive, emotive playing, which is vital across genres. Improvisation is woven into the curriculum from the earliest stages to foster creativity and confidence; students engage with scale patterns, call-and-response exercises, and improvisational games that build their musical vocabulary and freedom. Music theory is taught contextually, linked to repertoire and improvisation, helping students internalize concepts like harmony and melody in a hands-on way. Repertoire selection is highly personalized, encompassing jazz, blues, pop, classical, and more, to keep lessons meaningful and exciting. I support students in setting achievable goals tailored to their aspirations, whether performance-based or skill-oriented, and employ technology such as recording and playback tools, metronomes, and digital resources to aid practice. One of my most fulfilling experiences involved coaching a student through a challenging jazz solo, helping them develop both technical command and emotional depth, culminating in a standout recital performance. My ultimate goal is to help students become confident, versatile saxophonists who express themselves fully and joyfully through their instrument.

My saxophone teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that music is a powerful form of personal expression and growth, and that every student deserves a customized learning experience that honors their individuality. From the start, I focus on building a strong technical foundation with attention to breath support, embouchure development, finger agility, tone quality, and rhythmic accuracy, recognizing that these are essential for sustainable, healthy playing.
However, I also prioritize creativity and exploration by encouraging students to experiment with improvisation, phrasing, dynamics, and stylistic nuances across genres such as jazz, classical, blues, and pop. Lessons are tailored to meet students where they are, adapting teaching methods to their preferred learning styles and musical goals, whether they aim to perform in bands, compose original music, or simply enjoy playing for themselves. Theory and ear training are incorporated seamlessly, helping students to internalize scales, chord changes, and rhythmic patterns in a way that feels practical and inspiring. I embrace technology in my teaching, utilizing recording apps, metronomes, backing tracks, and digital resources to provide interactive feedback and enhance practice efficiency.
I also emphasize performance opportunities as vital milestones for building confidence and communication skills, encouraging students to participate in recitals, ensembles, and informal jams. One of the most rewarding experiences was witnessing a shy student grow into a confident soloist through structured improvisation exercises and supportive coaching. Ultimately, my goal is to empower students to develop technical proficiency, artistic voice, and a lifelong passion for music that enriches their lives in countless ways.
