About Maura

I have been teaching English fro three years now to people with different levels and objectives. I have done it in Venezuela, where I am from; In the US a couple of times; In Germany and now in Madrid. My relationship with my students is as important as the subject at hand. My experience has taught me that not everyone learns in the same way, so understanding the interests and needs of each student is a task that I take seriously and use as a guide for the formation of lessons. I have helped people to improve their level intensively for a job interview, to create a practical and efficient basis for moving to an English speaking country, to pass exams such as the TOEFL or the IELTS and at the same time I have given classes to people who just want to improve their language skills.

About the lesson

My learning of English is a long way from being "formal". Whenever I'm asked how or where I learned, the most honest answer, even considering the 7 months I studied English in the USA, is early exposure to language through my family, music and television. This allowed me to understand how useful it can be to get a little out of the grammar books when it comes to learning a new language. These are strategies that I have tested in my own experience studying French and German and are the ones that represent me when it comes to teaching. So to study languages and teach them, are two worlds that I keep as close as possible, to be able to put myself in the other's shoes and increase the level of understanding. I believe in individualizing the strategies according to each student, I believe that my position as a teacher is more that of a guide than a leader and I believe that learning a new language has all the capacity to be something more fun than intimidating
