About Harriet

Before becoming a fully qualified and working teacher, I was a special educational needs teaching assistant. During this time, I supported students with SEND and provided differentiated provision for them. I gained valuable insight in the varied needs of each individual student, whether they have diagnosed or suspected SEND, or none at all, and use this understanding every day in my teaching and tutoring practice.

I have also taught at various theatre schools around the UK, with students 4-16 years old, teaching drama, singing and combined performing arts. Before that I was a swimming coach, so I have been teaching in some capacity for over a decade.

Outside of work, I am a trained opera singer (grade 8), and recently performed in the choir for the opening night of the BBC proms, and for Andrea Bocelli at the O2!

About the lesson

I am a teacher of English and drama with a background in performing arts and a passion for using the latest and most developed teaching techniques to ensure success for all students. I have seen and experienced first hand the incredible impact of education in creating confident, creative, open minded, young people, who are skilled communicators and ready to enter the world and excel. Whether you are looking for tutoring to achieve a specific goal (exams, language tests etc.), longer term academic support, or more holistic study skills and coaching, I would be privileged to help.

In 2019 I qualified as a secondary school English teacher. I trained with UCL’s Institute of Education, which has been world number 1 for 10 consecutive years. I therefore have an up-to-date and in depth understanding of the best teaching techniques, and how best to apply them to get the best results.

I am student centred, which means I’ll begin by considering the needs of the student. We will discuss what they (or you) are studying, how they feel about each topic, text, or scheme of work, and set a plan from there. If possible, I will request feedback from their teachers to gain a more well-rounded idea of their starting point, but this is not necessary.

I am adaptive and flexible with my teaching – I regularly modify plans during sessions to ensure that I respond to the needs of my student.

Detailed and specific feedback is vital to aid progression in any subject. When working towards written examinations, I prefer to mark a student’s written work with them. This transparent approach helps students truly understand the mark scheme and requirements of the examination, and is the best practice for ensuring progress.
