About Michael
I am a writer and artist based in the Scottish Borders. I was schooled near Edinburgh, went on to study Film at Falmouth University, and then completed a postgraduate degree in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow. In the past, I have worked as a bookseller, where I organised book groups, engaged in writing reviews, and deepened my knowledge of the publishing market.
My personal ongoing projects include a dystopian novel set in a post-apocalyptic Italy, and a board game based on the history and folklore of the Anglo-Scottish Borders. Upon completion, I plan to complement both works with my illustrations.
I seek stories in any format I can get them, from books, to films, to video and tabletop games, to mini web comics spanning a panel or two. I am willing to delve into any genre, fiction or non-fiction, provided I am hooked by an intriguing premise. But my favourites are always Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Historical.
Outside of writing, my passion for creativity and storytelling extends to running sessions of tabletop roleplaying games, crafting and selling detailed illustrations and paintings, playing the bagpipes, taking part in stunt fighting at historical re-enactments, and performing on film sets as an extra.

My approach to a lesson is informal and conversational, running from 1 hour - 1 and a half hours. Storytelling is both a craft and an art form, and whilst there are many, many methods out there on how to go about writing creatively, there are no hard and fast rules to creating 'good art'. My goal is to help tease out your concepts and help nudge your work in the directions you want it to go, sharing all the tools and knowledge I possess to make that happen. I intend to be a guide and sounding board, rather than telling you exactly how something should be done.
I can offer my help at any stage of a project, be it developing ideas, researching inspiration, structuring narratives, or assisting in the editing process. In a lesson, we will talk through whatever spark or problem you are facing in the moment, brainstorming and problem-solving as we go. After an initial meeting, where I can learn what styles and genres interest you, and what you are looking to get out of the experience, we can establish the manner that is best suited to your individual learning. It may be, for example, that you want samples of your work closely scrutinised between sessions, and then the following meeting to be a step-by-step analysis. Or perhaps you are new to the craft, and would like guidance on activities to experiment and learn new techniques. Maybe your mind is racing with fragments of a story, and you just want someone to talk you through the jumble and help organise your thoughts.
My own writing (and reading) experience is wide and varied, beginning in earnest with screenwriting during my undergraduate degree in Film Studies, to honing the creative muscle in a master's degree in Creative Writing. Through my education, I have experience in writing short stories, poetry, screenplays, stage plays, graphic novels, and novels. Writing alongside coursemates, and joining external writing groups since then, also allowed me the invaluable opportunity to read and critique the work of others, in genres and writing styles I would not have engaged in otherwise. I continue to learn and study a healthy variety of sources in my ongoing work as a creative, in writing, illustration, and more.
These lessons are for anyone starting out with an inkling of a desire to craft a story, to seasoned writers seeking to get over a block or needing a second set of eyes on their work.
Disclaimer: At no point in my lessons will I use generative A.I., nor will I accept clients who submit work made using it.
