About Cooper
I don't intend to so much “teach” you as “guide” you. This is a class for “Creative” Writing, and as such, it would be remiss of me to tell you what the “correct” method of writing is. I will give examples of other writers you can glean inspiration from, but I will not be policing your writing style or content (within reason). I will be helping you create fictional stories in your own way, whether by writing an alternate ending to an existing story or creating a completely new world. Your path of learning is yours to make in this class.

This class is going to focus exclusively on Creative Writing, and will be focused on developing your own writing style. This will be a class where you can essentially write whatever you want (within reason and as long as it is original work). This is mainly aimed at college writing students who have felt stifled in creativity and self-expression by being told the “correct” way to write. The average lesson plan will consist of writing a short fictional piece (50-150 words at most) about anything they want, and a short paper explaining what it means to the student (a paragraph, at least). In each lesson, I will also suggest reading a few passages from a pair of books of the student’s choice and discussing the style in which they’re written (Tolkien’s extensive attention to detail vs. Cormac McCarthy’s simplistic, to-the-point descriptions, for example). This will most likely be accomplished via recordings of me giving the assignments and discussing material, and through emails containing the writings rather than live webcam discussion. This is partly for my students’ benefit, as it would give them enough time to fit the writing and lesson into their daily schedule as opposed to having to adjust things drastically to fit, and my own, being a graduate student. Having said that, I am willing to discuss things via webcam if the student so wishes.
Edit: I will not be able to travel, nor can I allow students to come to my home. I apologize, but this is something I’d prefer not to do. Also, I will not be teaching a “Reading” class; this is strictly a Creative Fiction Writing class.

Cooper is a recent graduate of Berry College, where he completed a BA in Creative Writing. He was my student in two creative writing classes, CRW 250 Introduction to Creative Writing and CRW 301 Intermediate Creative Writing, Poetry, and I have also read his recent work in fiction, his preferred genre. In my classes, he demonstrated a serious commitment to his own work as well as to that of his peers. As a creative writing major at Berry, Cooper completed a rigorous program which includes multi-genre study and three levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) in the preferred genre. Cooper also completed our demanding senior-level courses, Writing about Place and Writing in Community, as well as a number of upper division literature courses requiring significant critical writing. Berry’s creative writing workshop courses require not only extensive writing from the student but also an ability to articulate assessment of peer work with insight and tact. In addition, Writing and Community is a demanding service-learning course which requires community engagement and initiative. This is all experience that has well prepared Cooper for this position. Cooper is sincere, thoughtful, and well educate in this discipline, and I'm confident he will do good work for you.
Cooper was my student in literature classes as an undergrad at Berry College. He's an astute reader of literary texts and a writer of thoughtful, polished prose, skills that translate to his own creative writing. He will work one-on-one with folks on their creative work very effectively.
