About Roisin
I am an English graduate from University College London and am about to begin my masters in US History and Politics back at UCL. Whilst studying English at University level, I gauged an understanding of literature across the ages, from Old English through to contemporary modern literature. I have a keen interest in Modern War Poetry and modern fiction, as well as Victorian and Renaissance poetry and literature. More importantly, I tutor because I want to see students excel and succeed.

Each lesson typically begins with a brief conversation to gauge how the student is finding English at school and to reflect on any recent work they’ve done in the subject. This helps me tailor the session to their current needs and academic focus. We then move on to the specific areas where the student requires support. For younger students or those focusing on comprehension, we might examine a short passage. I ask the student to read it silently, after which we discuss the content in detail - highlighting elements such as structure, narrative technique, and language use. Following this, I provide a set of targeted questions to reinforce understanding and analytical thinking. Or for instance, if the student is in year 9 and completing the gothic module, I would focus on gothic literature with them. For GCSE or A-Level Literature students, lessons are usually centred around the texts they are studying. We begin with a broader discussion of the novel, play, or poetry collection before narrowing our focus to a particular passage. The student reads the passage, and together we identify key themes, literary devices, and contextual elements. I then present an exam-style question, and we work collaboratively to plan a structured and insightful response. Some sessions may focus specifically on essay skills—such as writing effective introductions or developing strong main body paragraphs. For A-level students in particular, I also draw attention to the use of critics and how to effectively embed critical opinions etc in essays and conclusions.
