About Helen

Hello! I'm Helen, a passionate pianist and music educator with 20 years of piano experience and over 10 years of teaching experience.

I graduated from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 2021 with a Bachelor of Music (Pedagogy) and have received performance and music theory awards from the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB).

Throughout my teaching career, I've worked with students aged 5–18 across various music studios, guiding them from Preliminary through to Grade 8.

What can you expect from my lessons?

AMEB Exam Preparation: Helping students develop their technical skills, musical understanding and confidence, with the majority of my exam students achieving B+ to A+ results.

Strong Musical Foundations: Developing music theory, sight-reading, technique and expressive playing.

Confidence & Performance: Encouraging students to share their music through school performances and small family gatherings.

Personalised Learning: Adapting lessons to each student's experience, abilities and individual musical goals.

"My Teaching Philosophy"

I believe learning the piano should be both rewarding and enjoyable. While technical development and musical discipline are important, I also encourage students to develop their creativity, confidence and genuine appreciation for music.

Alongside my teaching experience, I continue to explore music composition and performance, bringing my own musical development into my approach to teaching.

I currently work full-time outside of music and offer piano lessons on a casual, availability-dependent basis.

Whether you're beginning your musical journey or working towards your next AMEB examination, I'd love to help you develop your skills and confidence at the piano!

About the lesson

I enjoy using a step-by-step method to approach each problem students find difficult to overcome, so that a greater sense of learning and achievement has been earned by the student. I do expect students to be able to practice on a keyboard in their own time when I am not tutoring them. I will also send out educational material for students to learn after the lesson as a reading task to help improve their skills and ask them to fill out short answer questions.

For exam students, they are expected to undertake mock exams prior to the actual exam. Reports are also written at the end of the year to allow parents to see their progress that has occurred throughout the year.

My current availabilities are limited to Saturday afternoons this year.
