About Ian

Ian Jiang-Johnson made his concerto debut at age twelve with the Hsinchu Philharmonic, performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, and has since given solo recitals across the United States, Asia, and China. In 2022, he won the Interlochen Arts Summer Concerto Competition and appeared as guest soloist with the Interlochen Philharmonic in Kresge Auditorium, performing Sibelius's Violin Concerto — a performance subsequently broadcast on Interlochen Public Radio, alongside his recording of Mendelssohn's String Quartet in A minor.
As a private instructor at City Strings United in Boston, Ian teaches students of all ages and levels. Lessons are focused on building real, lasting technique, developing musical instinct, and establishing practice habits that translate into genuine progress, whether you're just starting out or preparing for auditions and competitions.
Johnson is currently a violinist at the New England Conservatory, where he is a Dean's Scholarship recipient, studying with Kristopher Tong of the Borromeo Quartet. He performs on a 1953 Simonazzi violin on loan from the CHIMEI Museum Culture Foundation in Taiwan.

Above all, I aim to help my students develop a genuine love not only for music, but for the process of discovering how we make the violin sing and reveal our musical voice.

For aspiring violinists of all levels, this begins with an uncompromising approach to technique, stability, freedom from unnecessary tension, and comfort with the instrument. From the very beginning, technique is always approached in service of the music. Even in detailed technical exploration, musical intention and expression remain our core ideals.

My teaching emphasizes exploration, curiosity, and consistency in technique. I provide students with tailored practice schedules, written lesson notes, and customized repertoire and daily exercises (especially regarding bow hold and left hand shape) designed to break bad habits and help find the students’ internal musical energy while helping manifest it into sound. This structure allows students to practice with purpose and see and feel measurable progress week to week.

While there is no single “correct” way to teach, I believe meaningful progress begins with a fully committed teacher. Preparing thoughtfully for each lesson, tracking long-term development, and adapting methods to each student are essential parts of my weekly work. My goal is to guide students not only toward technical and musical growth, but toward a lifelong connection to the violin, one that I’m very happy to have found!
