About Marian
I was the first in my family to attend college, but I was definitely not a star student when I first decided to pursue art history as my college major. I had been held back in elementary school as the result of hearing loss. I was treated and came out of the ordeal stronger for it, but with an appreciation for those with learning differences. As a result, I have no difficulty putting myself in the position of someone with learning differences. I am passionate about fostering growth and learning in my students, no matter their personal background or learning experience.

At the beginning of a course, my goal is to build the confidence of my students, most of whom are taking their first, and hopefully not final, art history course. I always begin my classes with an analytical exercise to show my students that their observations and instincts are reliable interpretive tools. I usually like to show them advertisements or other popular images that are commonplace to them, as a way to bridge the gap between pedestrian and academic analysis. I show them a series of advertisements and ask three questions: what are they selling? And how do you know? What is the context of these images, that you know of? This way, I can introduce an expanded vocabulary in the elements and principles of design regarding a familiar image.
Students come out of this exercise with more confidence in their eyes and critical analysis and are more likely to assert those opinions once we begin examining historical artworks.

I’ve known Marian since high school when she started her journey studying and tutoring history. She’s been continuously focused on both teaching others and learning in the field for many years now.
I got a chance to sit in on her PhD dissertation defense, where she demonstrated such a good balance of deep subject matter expertise and an approachable communication style that helped bring the non-experts in the room along with her.
Look no further for someone who is deeply passionate about the field and sharing her knowledge with others.View more recommendations
