About Nick

Hello, and welcome! I’m Nick Salazar, and I have been teaching high school social studies for 14 years. I still come to work every day inspired and ready to teach, and I bring that same energy to every tutoring session. I see us as teammates with one shared goal: your success.

I hold a Colorado Professional Teacher License in Social Studies (grades 7-12) and a master’s degree in Educational Foundations, Policy and Practice from the University of Colorado Boulder. I also have a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of New Mexico and have completed 30 graduate credits in United States History. Since 2020, I have served as a College Board AP Reader, scoring the APUSH exam, so I know firsthand how essays are evaluated. I currently teach AP U.S. History and AP Art History at Boulder High School.

I take this work seriously. I prepare for every session, give honest and specific feedback, and keep growing as a teacher. Next year, I will begin the process of earning National Board Certification, the profession’s highest mark of excellence in teaching.

You can expect a tutor who is professional, reliable, and invested in you. You bring the questions, and I’ll bring the tools and the confidence to help you succeed.

About the lesson

Teaching method and techniques

I meet you where you are. Whether you’re staring at a blank DBQ or already writing solid essays and chasing a 5, we start with your current work and build from there. My main focus is decoding prompts: breaking down what a question is really asking, spotting the task words, and planning a response before you write a single sentence. I give specific, actionable feedback on your writing, not just “good job” or “needs more analysis,” so you know exactly what to change next time. Because I score APUSH exams as an AP Reader, I know how essays are evaluated and what separates a strong response from an average one.

A typical lesson

Quick check-in on what’s coming up in class or where you’re stuck
Decode a prompt together (APUSH DBQ, LEQ, or SAQ, or Art History free-response and image analysis)
Draft or outline your response, with me coaching as you go
Review the feedback and revise the weak spots
Leave with one or two clear goals for next time

What sets me apart

I’ve spent 14 years in the classroom, and I’m with juniors and seniors all day, so I know how high schoolers think, what overwhelms them, and how to explain things in a way that sticks. I teach AP Art History and AP U.S. History, and I’ve scored the APUSH exam as a College Board Reader since 2020, so you’re learning from someone who sees the exam from both sides. I also hold a Colorado teaching license and a master’s degree in education.

Who the lessons are for

High school students, especially juniors and seniors, taking or preparing for AP U.S. History or AP Art History. Great for students who want to raise their essay scores, build confidence with the exam format, or get extra support alongside their class. All skill levels are welcome, from “I’m lost” to “I want a 5.”
