01. What do I offer?

I offer an in-depth approach toward improving my students' ability to read critically and analyse literature. I'm experienced at meeting students where they currently are in their academic progress as well as building their confidence so that they can achieve their desired grades.

02. Why do parents recommend me?

Parents not only recommend me because I measurably improve grades but also because I have a proven track record when it comes to making literature relevant and exciting to young people. Often students don’t know they actually like literature, which is sad but not all that surprising considering most have been taught by passionless under-paid teachers in over-crowded classrooms that made reading feel like hard-work. When students are engaged they find it easier to revise because otherwise they have to fight their own boredom.

I’m able to do this because I am patient, communicate clearly, and love sharing the texts I’m knowledgeable about with students. I plan my lessons in advance and give my students access to past papers, revision materials, and tailor-made guides that they can access online at no additional cost. I summarise texts chapter by chapter, providing prominent themes and important quotes. I help with essay writing in preparation for exams, proof-read coursework and give detailed feedback before the final submission deadline. My aim is for students to thoroughly develop their literary skills so their ideas come through clearly in essays and assignments.

03. Do I accommodate students with learning disabilities or neurodevelopmental disorders?

I have extensive experience working with learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders. I am well-read on the clinical literature and have taken courses on the best teaching practices for students with different developmental needs. Here are some of the approaches you can expect from me:

- For students with neurobehavioral disorders such as ADHD, I usually incorporate educational games and quizzes as I believe that this is one of the best ways to keep students engaged and ensure they retain relevant information. I allow students to use sensory fidget toys as these have been proven to regulate focus and reduce stress. I will often seat these students away from windows and other distractions to facilitate learning.

- I accommodate students that struggle with dyslexia by using dyslexia-friendly serif fonts, breaking up large walls of text, avoiding double negatives, and tailoring reading materials to be on light cream-coloured backgrounds. I present new language in small and manageable chunks so that it doesn’t overwhelm dyslexic student. I also focus on key language for the exam.

- For students with autism, I keep lessons structured and predictable, avoiding anything that might cause a sensory overload.

Please let me know in advance if your child has a learning disability or neurodevelopmental disorder. This will allow me to accommodate properly.
