About Dr Noah Gabriel

Originally from Vancouver, I lecture at University of Winchester on topics including Ethics, Epistemology, media criticism, political philosophy, Feminism and philosophy of science. I also teach A level philosophy at Sutton Grammar School.
My PhD is from the University of Sussex.
I've taught for over a decade in the American and British university systems, at 6 different institutions, and also designed learning programmes for Universities, non-profits, and start-ups.
I have taught in universities for over 10 yrs and run a learning nonprofit called College of Modern Anxiety. I currently lecture at University of Winchester, and I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Lessons are 1-2 hrs and can be done remotely or at any location in London.
Lately, I've been on a mission to learn street dance, despite lacking any sense of rhythm or the ability to tell left from right. Learning something for which I have little aptitude has taught me a lot about the learning needs of beginners!

I'm passionate about empowering learners!
I make complex, abstract philosophical ideas come alive by using rich, concrete examples to help you understand the ideas' relevance to your own lives, cares and concerns.
I start by discussing your learning goals and putting together a plan that we will work on together to ensure you accomplish them.
I then plan your lessons to suit your needs, using discussion, visuals, and experiences to support your learning. I design my lessons with special educational needs in front of mind.
I know the American and British university systems inside and out, so I can help you navigate them, get the most out of your university experience, and get top grades.

Here are some testimonials from former students:
"Noah has a real knack for simplifying complex concepts without being glib or reductive."
"Noah's teaching support was consistently excellent. He was always supportive and seemed to have a genuine interest in your queries, and to have someone as dedicated to helping really made all the difference when the material and subject matter could be overwhelming at times."
"Noah's teaching is engaging and thorough. As a first year student grappling with Existentialism, it was essential to have someone who understood the texts help break them down."

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I left school at age 12, because the learning environment of school got in the way of my own development. However, when I went back to formal education as a mature student and eventually earned my PhD in philosophy, I came to love what school and university has to offer. Now I love helping people navigate the challenges and roadblocks of the education system so that they can make it work for them.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love philosophical questions, the opportunity to think about the big questions like the meaning of life, and how to be good. It's a privilege to be able to think about these questions that are core to everyone's lives, and to get to know what history's greatest minds had to say about them too.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Because I believe we never stop learning and growing, at 40, I started studying dance. It took a while, but I eventually found a dance teacher, Rick, whose gentle way of leading classes and attention to the finer points of movement never ceases to inspire me.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a great tutor, it's important to care about the full person—I want to help you get great grades, but more than that, I want to help you find the way to be the most authentic version of yourself.
  • 5) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Philosophy can be challenging because it's so abstract! That's its power—it allows us to think more broadly than about what happens to be in front of your nose at any moment. However, it can also make it difficult to wrap your head around. I help ease this difficulty by bringing in concrete examples and fun activities to bring abstract ideas down to earth.
  • 6) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is getting to know my clients, understanding what the subject means to them, and how I can help them connect with it more deeply.
  • 7) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

The time I've dedicated to education and to understanding how people learn. Learning is the key to all superpowers, because it can make what seems out of reach attainable!
