About Grant
I am an ESSA Accredited Exercise Scientist completing a PhD at Charles Sturt University in Port Macquarie. I have 20 years of experience in martial arts with 5 years experience teaching. My gradeings include a 3rd degree black belt in Shorinjiryu Karatedo, 2nd degree black belt in Arjuken MMA, brown belt in Modern Arnis (weapons), and a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I also have 3+ years experience in the security industry with Strongs Security Services (Cert 2 Security Operations License No: (concealed information)). I have over 3 years experience competing in MMA cage fighting with 10 fights, 2 titles at light-heavyweight. I have approximately 10 years experience competing in various other formats including full contact Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I have previously delivered self-defense training for Essential Self Protection (ESP). These included both theory and practical components ranging across all aspects of effective defensive tactics.

Self defense can be approached either re-actively or pro-actively. I use training, both theoretical and practical, to equip clients in both methodologies. Practical training starts with gross motor movements that can be utilised instinctively with progression becoming more complex over time. Theoretical knowledge includes self-defense law and communication with NSW Police, dealing with the physiological response to fear, street awareness and mindfulness, and much more. My teaching style is quite relaxed. The training is effective but the environment is casual. Questions and comments are encouraged, everyone is equal, no Japanese hierarchical structure.
