About Abidah

I am an experienced and highly committed tutor with a strong track record of preparing students for GCSE and A Level English examinations. I have particular expertise in supporting students through the increased rigour of the current specifications, including exam technique, coursework, and full mock preparation.

I hold a First Class degree in Classics from King’s College London and completed my PGCE at the University of Cambridge, qualifying as a secondary English teacher specialising in modern literature in 2024. Alongside classroom training, I have over eight years of experience tutoring English at GCSE, A Level, and primary level, as well as experience as an official AQA GCSE examiner. This has given me a detailed, practical understanding of mark schemes, assessment objectives, and what examiners are genuinely looking for.

I regularly design and host full mock examinations and structured revision programmes, and all students I have worked with for a year or more have secured a minimum Grade 8 at GCSE, and strong results at A Level in both English Literature and English Language. My teaching is rigorous, tailored, and results driven, with a clear focus on building confidence, precision, and independent thinking.

As I offer online tuition, I am able to provide flexible lesson times to suit students’ schedules while maintaining a consistently high standard of teaching. Please note that I operate a 12 hour cancellation policy, and lessons cancelled within this window are chargeable.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in private tutoring began during my undergraduate studies at Kings, where I was studying Classics. Initially, I took on tutoring as a part-time job, but over time, I developed a deep love for teaching and a growing passion for the art of expression. As I continued to work with students, I discovered the joy of helping others explore their potential and share my enthusiasm for linguistics. I find it incredibly rewarding to open students' eyes to the beauty and power of language and literature, as well as to broaden their understanding of texts in a more expansive way.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I thoroughly enjoy teaching both modern and classical literature, particularly poetry. One of my favourite poets to teach is Christina Rossetti, as I believe her work is rich with emotion, depth, and social commentary. Her poems explore themes of love, loss, and spirituality, and I find her nuanced language particularly compelling for students. In addition to Rossetti, I also enjoy discussing various literary movements and styles with my students, helping them engage with the broader context of the works they are studying. However, I do admit that sometimes it can be challenging to get students to connect with more abstract literary theories, though I try to make them as accessible as possible.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have two key role models who greatly influenced me-my English teacher at school and my father. My dad, who taught linguistics at the university level, exposed me to the beauty of language from an early age. Growing up in an environment where the intricacies of language and the art of writing were constantly discussed shaped my passion for these fields. Additionally, my English teacher at school was a major inspiration due to his dedication to his students. He was always willing to mark the numerous essays I wrote and took the time to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback. This inspired me to adopt a similar approach in my tutoring, where I always ensure my students' hard work is recognised and supported, regardless of the effort they put in.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe that a good tutor must be empathetic, patient, and adaptable. I understand that some concepts may be more difficult for certain students, and I always ensure that I do not move on to the next topic until the student feels confident in their understanding. Furthermore, I am inherently dedicated to my students' success. I believe in a tailored, student-focused approach, and I will go above and beyond to ensure they achieve their desired grade. My students' success is my priority, and I always strive to create an environment in which they feel supported and encouraged.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One of my most memorable moments as a student was when I was struggling to understand a particularly challenging aspect of Greek mythology during my Classics studies. I felt completely lost and overwhelmed, but my teacher took the time to explain the material in a way that connected the mythological stories to real-world themes. This made the content come alive for me, and I went from feeling defeated to absolutely captivated by the subject. This experience reinforced my belief in the importance of personalised teaching and the power of making challenging material relatable to students. I try to use this approach with my own students, helping them connect deeply with the content and see it in a new light.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges I face with teaching English is its inherent subjectivity. Literary interpretation varies from person to person, and some students struggle to embrace the idea that there may be multiple interpretations of a text. At the same time, this is also what makes the subject so fascinating and rewarding. I enjoy guiding students through the complexities of language and encouraging them to form their own interpretations while developing their critical thinking skills. English is an ever-evolving field, and I strive to help students engage with it in a way that both challenges and excites them.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

While I am deeply passionate about teaching, I also have a love for travel. In fact, I've visited 18 cities in one year! This passion for exploration helps me in teaching individuals from all over the globe, as it broadens my understanding of different cultures and perspectives, enriching the learning experience for my students.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

As a Superprof, I am dedicated to my students' success and committed to working as hard as possible to help them achieve their best possible mark. I am patient, supportive, and adaptable in my teaching methods, ensuring that each lesson is tailored to the specific needs and learning style of the student. I believe in creating a positive and motivating environment where students feel encouraged to reach their full potential. Ultimately, my goal is not only to help students succeed academically but also to inspire a genuine love of learning.
