About John Michael

I am a First Class graduate of the University of St Andrews, where I studied International Relations and Geography, and hold an MSc with Distinction from Imperial College London, specialising in Energy Policy. My academic background spans geography, politics, international relations, environmental and energy studies, history, social theories, and writing.

Alongside my studies, I have over two years of professional consulting experience in the energy sector, where I've developed strong skills in research, analysis, problem-solving and communicating complex ideas clearly. Throughout my education, I have also supported friends and peers with tutoring, essay writing and academic work.

I genuinely loved learning throughout my own education, and one of my main motivations for tutoring is to help students discover that same curiosity and enjoyment. I want students not only to achieve their academic goals, but to develop confidence in themselves as learners and find subjects and ideas they are genuinely excited to explore.

About the lesson

My teaching style is friendly, patient and highly adaptable. Having been diagnosed with learning differences, I understand firsthand that students learn and process information in different ways, and that these differences need not limit academic achievement.

My teaching style focuses on genuine understanding, breaking complex ideas into manageable pieces, making connections between topics, encouraging curiosity and helping students become confident independent thinkers. Depending on the student and subject, lessons can combine discussion, visual learning, guided exercises, exam practice, essay planning and constructive feedback. I am particularly well placed to support students with academic writing, critical thinking, research, and building strong, well-evidenced arguments.

I offer flexible 30–60 minute lessons tailored to each student’s age, level, learning style and goals. I am happy to work with students across all stages of education, from early-years and school-age learners through GCSEs and A Levels to undergraduate and Master’s students. Whether the goal is building confidence, mastering a difficult topic, improving grades, preparing for exams or strengthening university-level work, I will adapt my approach to the individual student.
