About Julia

Salve! I'm Julia! I'm from New Zealand and I have studied Latin and Classical Studies at college for over 11 years. I have taught Latin at college level at both the University of Pennsylvania and Victoria University of Wellington (8 courses in total) and have been a private Latin tutor for high school students for over three years. I’ve been a teaching assistant for 10 college level courses, and have a PhD, MA, BAHons and BA in Classical Studies so I can explain the historical and cultural contexts of the literature we read. I love teaching Latin and I'd love to teach you! You allowed us to ask tangential questions to understand particular things that interested us.” “Julia is a great instructor – she has extensive knowledge of the material, and she’s amazing at following up with students in through email or in class when they ask a question that doesn’t have an immediately clear answer.” My goal is not only to educate students about the realities of the ancient Roman world, but to have them ponder how the ancient world is relevant to today. In teaching Latin, I seek to inspire my students to do the difficult and meticulous work needed to learn the Latin accurately by showing them what extraordinary access to the ancient world reading primary texts in their original language grants. Watching students realize that Latin grants them greater understanding of not only the ancient world but also of the modern world gives them the enthusiasm to persevere with the challenges in language learning, such as memorizing paradigms and vocabulary. One of the things that sets me apart from most tutors is that I have taken 11 college level Latin courses and have won multiple prizes in Latin. My qualifications: PhD. Classical Studies. About the lesson

I offer lessons to students at all levels and at all stages of their Latin learning journey.

If you are an absolute beginner whose school doesn’t offer Latin but you want to learn it so that you have a leg up with English vocab and grammar, SAT and ACT tests, science, law, medicine, or learning modern romance languages, I am here to help!

If you take Latin at school or college and need some extra support, I am here for you! I will help you understand Latin and best of all, improve your grades!

I customize each lesson to your needs and meet you where you are.

In a typical lesson you can expect me to take you through exercises of all types to help you master grammatical topics. We will focus on vocabulary building, grammar use and identification, and translation skills. In each lesson I will assess what needs more attention for the future and I will create a lesson accordingly.
