Private lessons are a great opportunity for either beginners or more advanced actors to improve their skills and sharpen their technique. As you explore different acting methods and develop your own professional style on screen, these courses are full of fun tips to teach you exactly what to do, and what not to do when performing on stage.Â
Acting classes are great at giving students exposure to different genres. From drama to romance, to thriller - you should be familiar with the main types of acting. Whilst you may want to hone in on training for a particular genre in your course, versatile actors who are comfortable and have experience across a range of fields on stage will have more auditions and industry opportunities available to them.Â
Comedy, in particular, is a genre that often requires some improvisation. It may be daunting at first for beginner students, or even nerve-wracking at times in front of other kids in class, however, improv is one of the acting techniques that needs plenty of practice over the years. Having a good level of improvisation skills is also useful in an audition for whichever genre. Feel free to ask your teacher if they have any short videos you can view online or fun training exercises that you can work on outside of school and in between classes. Otherwise, you may want to attend a short course or some workshops near you dedicated to improvisation skills.
Acting is all about preparation. In order to play a character well, you will need to spend time researching the role and understanding what message is being portrayed. Some performers go to great lengths, for example by using the “method acting” technique where the actor attempts to inhibit the true mental, physical, and emotional state of a character in order to draw on their own personal experiences and make the performance more believable on screen. Â
Rehearsing is a big part of being a professional actor. Facial expressions, behaviour, voice, body language and movement are just some of the performance skills actors need to work hard on so their character is as realistic and convincing as possible whether it is on-screen or in the theatre. Paying attention to the little details can make a world of difference and take performing to the next level. However staying in character and giving shape and meaning to whoever you are playing can sometimes be more challenging with particular roles over others, this is where performing arts training and professional acting classes come in.Â
If you are working on film as opposed to a live performance, you will also need to work on your consistency between takes. Some scenes will need to be redone time and time again, and in the final edit, different takes might be used together. So it is important for the actor to know exactly where they need to be located at all times in relation to the camera, and where the other actors or props are positioned on stage.Â
There are many classes and programs all over Australia, from beginner workshops for kids in Sydney to advanced drama courses in Perth. There are several things however that should be considered when deciding on your instructor. You can choose your class based on the tutor’s professional experience, qualifications, location, the price charged per hour, and of course, you must take into consideration your own needs as a student.Â
Be sure to look through your teacher’s profile and read up on reviews from past students. When you contact potential instructors, key things to discuss are the location of the class (if the lesson will take place online from the comfort of your home, or a local film studio or school), the duration of the program, the course frequency (if classes are on a short term or long term basis), and which time and days of the week are best for both you and the tutor. Some teachers on Superprof even offer the first hour of the lesson for free, this is ideal for seeing whether you get along and are comfortable with their teaching program.Â
No matter how experienced you are in drama or what stage you’re at in your professional working career, there is always room for growth and the possibility to learn from teachers in the performing arts industry who can give you the best insider tips. So whether you are a high school student taking drama classes in Adelaide, preparing for a theatre audition in Melbourne, or trying to learn a tricky role anywhere else in Australia - start looking online for a private acting coach and have fun whilst improving your acting skills today!
