About Jo-Anne

Jo-Anne trained in the UK as an Occupational Therapist working with people in many areas including general surgery, cardiovascular surgery, head injury rehabilitation and social services for the assessment of major home adaptations for wheelchair access and the promotion of independence for access to and within the home. Since moving to New Zealand Jo-Anne worked in pediatrics, respiratory, renal, cardiology, neuro rehabilitation and fatigue management.

Her passion for dance was reignited when facilitating fatigue management education and support groups. The subject of energy, prioritizing, pacing, considering what brings energy, drains energy, our values, enjoyment, emotions and habits all having an impact on energy levels and more. Realizing again that I flow with energy the most when I dance brought me back to the enjoyment, feeling of being revitalized, balanced and healthier.

A friend showed me an article on The Dancing Way and I was so inspired. The words were jumping off the page to me. After experiencing a workshop I decided to train to be a Dancing Way, Stretch and Relax teacher and here I am.

About the lesson

Jo-Anne has a BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy (25 years) and is "The Dancing Way Stretch & Relax" trained (10 years).

The Dancing Way (also known as Wu Tao) is a choreographed gentle set of movements to music. The dance opens up energy flow in the meridians for balance in body and mind. Jo-Anne can adapt the dance for all abilities including in a sitting position.

The dance is based on the Tao (The Way) to encapsulate a method to bring balance and harmony to body, mind and spirit.

Chi flows through meridian channels that connect with organs and the dance gently stretches the 12 main channels that are associated with 12 organs in a supportive cycle sequence. For example, the beginning of the dance stretches the meridians associated with the Air element which govern the lungs and the large intestine. These meridians are closely associated with and support the immune system. The next part of the sequence stretches the Water element meridians. These are the kidneys and the bladder and are associated with the bone marrow, brain and the spinal cord. And so on the dance progresses, opening sequentially the meridians associated with Wood, Fire and Earth.

Meditation and Self Shiatsu Massage can also be incorporated to further help relaxation and open up chi flow.

The sessions are taught remotely via webcam or if you are in the Nelson or surrounding areas I can see you at home and should allow for 1 hour. This dance does not require a lot of room.
