About James
I'm currently studying an English Literature Degree at Cambridge University. I've been a passionate student of English since the beginning my academic career. I achieved an A* at both GCSE and A-level, with a 100% mark in my Literature A Level. I have a broad range of knowledge, covering everything from Medieval Literature through the 18th century and out into Modernism. I have studied Shakespeare and could help with the set texts at GCSE and A-level. I have also studied specialist modules at Durham University in English Literature; these were "Technology and The Victorian Imagination", "English Literature and Science", and finally a historical study of "Native American Rights Movements."
One of my major strengths is that I studied Philosophy and History too (achieving A* in these also) which allows me a great level of access into texts from both Historicist and Theoretical perspectives. Once into the text, I can closely analyse with an absolutely precise level of technical ability and with analytical flair.

English is all about interpretation and engagement. The text only half exists until we read it. As a result, I've found the best approach is to let the student explore a piece of literature, considering a particular passage or quote, and then let their natural interpretation guide what we think, discuss and discover. Along the way, if they uncover anything noteworthy but cannot work out exactly what it is, I'll provide guidance and then we'll see how we can work this into wider arguments, critical concerns or themes. This practice not only keeps their analytical skills fresh - essential for unseen poetry and prose exams - but revises sections of the text for their longer, open or closed book exams. I'm also very happy to go through past exam papers with them, planning questions etc.
Although I teach exclusively by webcam, I would encourage a cup of tea or coffee with the session, because literature is fun. (It really is.)
